Time Management Training – An Investment Not a Cost for Your Company

, , , ,

Many organizations see time management training as something they’ll spend their money on, only if they have to. Usually the first thing a company will do to satisfy their budget will be to cut back on or eliminate their training needs, but this is not something that they cannot a really afford to do and here’s why;

Companies or Corporations have the notion that training is a COST and not an investment. You will invest in a good stock that will pay decent dividends right?  Well this is similar to good training and if you choose the right time management training you will be able to see the dividends that will add to your company’s bottom line. It really doesn’t matter what we pay for an investment. What’s relevant is what we get in return. One of the best ways to jeopardize an organization’s future in today’s world and increase the probability of troubled times it to look at training as a cost and pay the price of not training or provide substandard training that operates only as a band-aid for the training requirements.

A person that is paid $50,000 per year who is wasting just one hour per day is costing the organization $6,250 per year. If through one of our Time Management Workshops that person can learn how to recapture just one hour per day, that translates into a payback to the organization of $6,250 per year! If there is a group of 25 people, the return to the organization is $156,250 per year! That doesn’t even include other benefits like profitability, reduced turnover, improved morale, enhanced teamwork, greater creativity etc.)

In only three years the payback is $468,750. Where else would your organization invest to achieve that return and payback?

Not too long ago, soft skills training was an option for most organizations. Today it is no longer an option. If any of us continue to do what we do the same way, within five years most of us will become obsolete. Why?, That is because our competitors are helping their people to become more effective through training programs.

If we look closely at companies who are doing well in the long run, they almost always have a well thought out training program in place with the understanding that they will recoup their investment many fold.

They realize the price for not training is the real expense of training’.

The most important training or knowledge enhancement you can offer to your employees is in the personal development area. Effective time management is a life skill which affects us all. Depending on how skilful we are at managing our time it can have a major impact on the whole of our life. Our skill levels in this area can greatly benefit us or cause us to be constantly stressed out.

Training is a life- long endeavor. It needs to be ongoing. Life changes constantly and so do our needs and those of our people, the number one asset in every business. Time Management training is crucial for it’s when we learn to use our time effectively that we get so much more done in our lives.

How are People Motivated?

Importance of MotivationPeople are motivated in different ways to reach desired various goals and achievements. Motivation towards goals and or achievements can be as common as cleaning out your garage, rearranging your living room or tackling that deck you wanted to build. Goals can also be a bit loftier in the sense that they will benefit your status get to that next level of management in your company or decide to switch careers totally. In any case goals have one thing in common whether they are large or small. The things can get you to start then complete your goals are simply reasons that trigger and cause you to start an action towards achieving your desired goals. Let’s take building a deck for example: You may have been at a gathering at a friend’s house and they may had their party on their deck, it was such a great party and you found that your enjoyed being outside on a wooded platform that was complete with sitting areas and cooking options. What happened here is you had gotten a feeling of enjoyment which triggered an emotion you want to experience at your house on your own deck. So now you have the importance of motivation behind you to carry out the task of building that deck.

The Importance of Motivation

Why do you need Time Management?

Good Time Management Skills

I had the opportunity to facilitate a time management workshop for group of social workers in Charleston SC while working for a company that I got my feet wet in the motivational business. My first thought was that this group was tasked to come to a required seminar and give up their valuable time. TMI am a huge proponent of effective time management techniques but initially did not see an immediate importance to this group. What I did not realize was that these professionals and I do mean professionals are probably the MOST time challenged individuals that I may know of. They have to get to work very early and leave really late; in between they have to deal with people in need and liaison with other programs/organizations to help people with all sorts of social needs. Probably the most challenging thing they had to conquer was setting and classifying priorities because their priorities were tied to people that all needed their help seemingly at the same time.

Time Management Tips And Strategies

What they were about to learn would change their time management habits for good IF they would stick to a system. The system is the key to consistent and effective time management and if you veer from your system and try to wing it you will lose every time. Just when you think you may have some major leeway and get off track you will certainly lose your plan. Time is so slippery – it’s like taking your eye off a toddler for a moment and the next thing you know there’s trouble. So how do you stay on course and accomplish the things you set out to do? How many times at the beginning of the week to you have a list of goals that you mentally set out to accomplish but at the end of the day or week you may only reach less than 50%? One of the main reasons this happens… It’s because those goals that you had were not defined into S.M.A.R.T goals. By SMART goals I mean realizing if they are Specific, Measureable, Actionable, Realistic and Time Specific. Using the S.M.A.R.T Goal criteria will help you determine if your goals are in fact valid and achievable. This is the formula you have to use to accomplish your goals successfully. In the case of the Social Workers (no pun intended) they had to define each goal with this formula in order to prioritize their situations to determine immediate need from the needs that could wait. Prioritizing is the next step to successful time management, yes once you have defined a valid goal then you must prioritize with the highest urgency first then trickle down to the things that can be subsequently. There may be more defining and refining of your goals in terms of the activities you will use to achieve them which will also help you prioritize.

We are often high-jacked by many distractions throughout the day both internal and external but if you stick to a good time management system you can and will accomplish almost anything you set out to do.
