Why Do So Many Companies Discount Their Training Needs?

Most companies that  have considered training for their business are divided into two schools of thought, some say that they have good experience with  training companies and some  have not.I have talked to so many people who work in large corporations and small alike just to get a barometer on what their training experiences have been and perceptions are. It seems like I get a mixed bag of responses and I will attribute certain issues to those responses later.  A good training company is a company that will remedy any internal employee issues or deficits by  tailoring or customizing a training program that addresses those particular issues. There are also training companies that have and institute training programs that are cookie cutter and broad based – not there is anything wrong with those but, those training programs tend to not produce the desired results that a company thinks they were going to get from the beginning they may have thought that the particular training program would remedy their current situation.

The other school of thought is that a lot of companies just plain do not think that they need the training and believe that they do not work. Just for example and for illustrated purposes this is the best example – The U.S Military has the best trained soldiers in the world hands down in the world. There are many countries that have large and powerful militias but their training is not even close to the U.S’s and that is because the other countries think that they do not need the assessment or address their training needs to be successful, they think they can sustain a victory somehow by shear force and numbers. This could be further from the truth. The proof is always in the pudding and when tested or brought to task proper preparedness (training) always wins! Another short example is one of the most successful football teams in NFL History – the New England Pats. Not an overly talented team by any means but they are trained by one of the best coaches and systems in the league. The other teams think that they can win by merely having the biggest and best players just like in a corporation that has some of the best and brightest employees thinking that they do not need the training because they have the players, NOT TRUE! This is exactly why the companies that have their people trained with tailored or customized outside training programs are stronger performers and better equipped to successfully compete and win against companies that have fooled themselves into thinking that they did not address their training needs. It does not take too many instances for a poorly trained company to realize that do in fact need to assess current situation for prospective training needs

Training programs by good training companies if chosen and vetted properly can be the key to increasing the profit to your bottom line. They will be a tremendous help in creating a harmonious environment for the workplace while taking the pressure and stress off management. Many companies look at team building events as an afterthought to spend whatever money they have left at the end of the year mainly because they think of a team building event being recreational.  Granted many team building companies offer Go Kart adventures, cooking events, and alike which are fine to get your personnel to be able to connect and experience fun through recreational activities outside the workplace. These types of recreational events have shrouded the true purpose of team building which is designed to reestablish or mend communication and cooperation that has either broken down in your workplace.

Many companies look for ways to increase efficiency within their personnel that will have residual or long lasting impressions. The companies that have used highly effective well thought out team building activities do see carryovers from the events in their workforce long after the team building events are over. Team building events that do have lasting effects on your personnel should include components such that will reveal or resolve any type to conflict or communication issues that may have been building up or inhibiting progress  among teams, fellow employees or between management.  I had the experience of doing a series of team building exercises for a large national organization that resolved an ongoing conflict with a manager /subordinate for many months and it only took a half of a day to for the breakthrough. During another team building event in which the employees were tasked to work together with employees that they may not to have chose to team up with. One of the participants approached me after the event was over and explained that the team building exercise broke down barrier that she had with another employee and was grateful for the experience!

Properly organized team building events that include problem solving activities, and Training Games with well thought out activities can result in tremendous results for productivity.  Most companies feature a corporate workforce of people that do not know each other well outside of the workplace and therefore are not entirely at ease with each other.  A natural amount of camaraderie will most likely develop between people who interact with each other on a daily basis, particularly those who sit next to or near each other. Team Building Exercises are therefore primarily designed to allow people to get to know each other in a relaxed and informal environment who otherwise would not be given the opportunity to meet each other outside of a professional situation
