Goal Setting Will Surely Bring Success

It is often easy to forget exactly how important goal setting is to self improvement. We can have lofty ambitions for changing or improving who we are, but if we don’t begin the journey with one step as Confucius once said and then break it down into smaller plans, the journey might begin to seem impossible.

The reason goal setting works as a means of self improvement is two-fold: the first part is obvious it allows us to break a really complex task down into small components that are easier to follow, more detailed, and less overwhelming. The second reason why goal setting is an effective means of self improvement is that it provides us with constant motivation. Whenever we accomplish that goal or objective on the way to the greater goal, we feel as if we have made progress, and it emboldens us to work towards the next goal in line.

Before anyone can begin goal setting for self improvement, he must determine what it is about himself that he would like to change and for what reason. For some people, the ultimate act of self improvement would involve quitting smoking cigarettes. For others, weight is a self improvement issue for which they are most concerned. For others, it might be something different, like being more assertive, more financially secure, or more charitable.

Of course, no one knows our faults better than we do. If we’re overweight, we usually know just horrible it makes us feel, even if no one around us even really notices it. If we drink beyond what could be considered careful moderation, we know how it makes us feel and what it has done to our relationships.

Now, once you have identified what it is that you would like to improve about yourself, you can begin the goal setting process. Start with the ultimate goal (i.e., to become a better speaker in front of a crowd). Next, depending on how large your ultimate goal is and how long it will reasonably take you to accomplish begin goal setting for objectives with timelines. For these smaller objectives, it is a good idea to tie them to actions, rather than results. If, for instance, your goal setting objective is research and read material that will help you overcome your fear of public speaking, or how to become a more persuasive speaker. Then you may want to look for public speaking classes online or in your city that offer classes that will help you overcome your public speaking anxiety.

You may find and read printed material to help you get rid of your public speaking anxiety ,but feel like you have only completed 30% of your goal setting objective  then you will want to accomplish another small goal setting plan would be to attend a public speaking class. Public speaking classes will give you the opportunity to get involved and practice what you will learn to give you more confidence. These small or part actions will serve as bit pieces to help you accomplish your goals of becoming better at public speaking. If you followed the goals you set out to accomplish for the time period : did I read the proper materials to help me with my public speaking fear, did I attend public speaking classes as to have been tutored and practice public speaking, and did I practice my art of presentation giving ? So, to reiterate, successful goal setting for self improvement consists of three things: creating long term goals, short term objectives, and re-evaluating the plan to make sure it is more realistic.

 

A Public Speaking Technique That Will Have a Lasting Effect on Your Audience

Contrary to what many may think, repetition is an essential public speaking technique that you need to master if you want your audience to remember your presentation. Usually any presentation regardless of length can be boiled down to just 3 or 4 main points or even less. By skillfully repeating these points in various ways, the audience will have them imprinted on their minds without being bored. Below are four guidelines that will help you achieve

Use The Theme Or Title
 

Use the theme or title of your presentation effectively. Your theme will contain key thought containing words. Make sure you elaborate on those key words during your presentation. Keep linking your material back to your theme or title so it runs like a thread through the presentation much like the thread in a garment holds it together. The audience should be able to see the connection between what you are saying at any given time and the main subject or title of your presentation. 
Re-state Ideas 

Use repetition skillfully by re-stating the key ideas through the presentation, either using the exact same words or phrases or employing similar words to say the same thing. If you have a catch phrase or pithy slogan you want to remember, repeating it at strategic points in the presentation can be very effective. 
A summary early in the presentation can be a powerful method of repetition. For example, state beforehand the main points you are going to consider, then deal with them, and finally give a brief summary of the points you considered. 
The Progressive Summary 

Using a progressive summary of main ideas through your presentation to reinforce the ideas on your audience can be a very powerful public speaking technique, especially if you number or itemize them. For example, you might mention there are three main ideas to be considered, then briefly state them. Then say, “Let’s take the first point . . .” Afterward you can say, “So up to now we have considered Point 1 (restate in a couple of words). Now we’ll deal with Point 2.” After that you can say something like, “So far we have seen Point 1 which was . . ., and also Point 2 in which we saw . . . Let’s now look into Point 3.” Finally, you conclude by saying, “So what have we learned so far? Point 1 was . . . Then we considered Point 2. Finally in Point 3 we showed . . .” 
Using this formula of repetition is very effective in lodging key points in the minds of your audience so they will remember them easily after your presentation is finished. 
 Be Vivid 

Be on the constant look out for words you can use to add feeling and color to your presentation. 
You may discover them through your own reading or you may hear them from another speaker. If you see or hear a word that makes an impact on you, note it down and keep it for future reference when you might use it in your own presentation. Gradually as your vocabulary increases to include dynamic words full of vigor, your presentation skills will develop too as you convey vivid mental images to your audience. Using a variety of vivid words and expressions directly related to your main points and theme will give you the flexibility of being able to repeat them often but with a different flavor. 

Repetition is an essential public speaking technique. However, it needs to be used skillfully. The four  guidelines above will help a public speaker use powerful repetition without appearing to be boringly repetitive! 

The Secret to Giving an Effective Presentation with PowerPoint

Most people have a fear of speaking in public, but when tasked to give an effective presentation by power point they feel a little more at ease. The reason is that they now have the information they are going to present at hand. This can be a double edge sword because the presenter in this scenario will end up using the slides as a crutch and may actually fail as a true presenter.

Giving an effective Power Point presentation involves much more than just showing and telling with slides. Most people will have a canned power point with all sorts of information on the slides then merely present the slides in a progressive manner like they would their slide show form last summers’ vacation. First of all to come off with an effective presentation you need to understand that you the speaker is the focal point of the presentation. Your audience should have their attention on you as a speaker and the slides are just supplemental.  Secondly to be successful and have the right impact on the audience Power Point starts with the actual design so that the audience will not be reading the slides instead of looking at the presenter. For example; Slides should have a dark background and light type which is the protocol these days, this makes the slides easy to see and follow.

 Here are some further points and rules to follow for an effective presentation:

  1. There should be no more than six words across with only six lines of copy or words.
  2. You should not have any animation as it will distract the audience especially if the presentation is a little dry.
  3. Pictures or illustrations only if necessary. Logos should be placed at very bottom corner.
  4. Limit your colors to three only! Red for impact, Blue and Green for positive
  5. Use clear concise copy w/ bullets instead of long sentences
  6. Narrow your points to three or a maximum of 5 at the most
  7. Reveal each point one by one as to not have the audience read ahead.

The mission of giving a successful Power Point presentation only to use your slides as an aid NOT as the presentation itself. You should know your material very well before your presentation so that your slides will only serve as a marquee for the audience as to what is coming up next. Your slides can also help you get back on track or remember where you are going in case you lose your thoughts. You come off as authentic and genuine to your audience when you are less dependent on your slides.  If you can understand that giving a Power Point requires a unique blend of discipline whereas you the presenter are the focal point and the slides are merely an appendage you will be able to give an extremely effective presentation.

Most people DO NOT like to speak in front of an audience being that they experience great anxiety or public speaking fear issues in front of crowds. I run into many professionals that say that are great one on one and are great sales people but fail in front of audiences simply because they are afraid. Actually most of those people would love to be more comfortable speaking to a large audience, but either do not know how to remedy this fear or are not motivated to do so. The fix just takes a little courage and few simple tips that can be used with practice to overcome this affliction that is holding them back from being good presenters.

Public speaking Tip #1 – Know that 90 percent of your nervousness does not show to the audience. The folks out in the crowd cannot see things like your sweaty palms, nervous stomach, racing heart and many more, so relax and with the knowledge that  the audience does not know that you are nervous.

Public Speaking Tips #2 and #3 – Never try to memorize or recite your presentation word for word.  Many speakers fall into the trap thinking that they can deliver the perfect presentation if they memorize or recite but this feat is impossible and it will only lead to a broken presentation.

Public Speaking Tip #4 – Search the audience for friendly and receptive faces. This will give you the confidence that you are being well received.

Public Speaking Tip #5 – Show up early and get everything set up right. Being prepared and knowing everything is set will give you plenty of confidence at the beginning of your presentation because you will feel like you own the room.

Public Speaking Tip #6 – If at any moment during your presentation that you feel uptight or nervous , simply take a few deep breaths. Taking deep breaths brings more oxygen to the brain and will relieve your nervousness.

When most people think of public speaking or becoming a public speaker or simply giving a presentation at work they think they have to come off with the talent of a Joel Osteen or a powerful corporate executive. Yes those people do possess a type of presence and charisma along with a powerful voice. This is a big misconception. We do have different personalities and the key is finding your voice and being able to reach an audience effectively with your personality type. First of all the reason you may lack the confidence is because you are measuring yourself against an ideal of the perfect public speaker as the aforementioned above, get rid of that notion right away, this is what will kill your confidence. I have taught many public speaking workshops and have witnessed many personalities – the successful participants are those that take their true personality and use the qualities that they possess to their benefit. For example a very cheery student used her friendly style to make the audience feel at ease. A more analytical student use his expertise informative style to impress us with his knowledge. This is why it is important to use your own style

Qualities of a Good Speaker

Think about what makes a good speaker. What makes you listen to what they have to say? How do they capture your attention? Effective public speakers establish rapport with their audience and engage them that’s what the “big guys “ do it’s just that they have made such a name for themselves you forget that they are simply using basic techniques to reach their audience. So how to do establish rapport with your audience? First of all you need to know your audience then connect to them with points of interest relative to what they had come to hear. Speakers like Tony Roberts or Joel Osteen have ready – made audiences because people are coming to hear them improve their lives so they simply site stories or examples that the audience can relate to throughout their speaking engagement. People relate to stories very easily because there are usually parts in a story that everybody can relate to. For example if you are telling a story of a time when you were driving down the road late on a snowy night on Christmas eve and almost got hit by an on – coming car going out of control because the streets were very icy and somehow you managed to avoid the accident. There are many things that people can relate to in that story even if they did not experience the same thing. They may have been in a fender- bender recently, they may have remembered a time when they were driving late on Christmas Eve, they remembered a time when they managed to avoid an accident, or may even recall a memory that they experienced on Christmas Eve. The point here is to be able to capture your audience and engage them and you will have won half the battle.

Characteristic of a Good Speaker

Another misconception is that you have to be perfect to be a good speaker. Sometimes the most perfect speakers are boring. The audience likes a speaker who can be human, if a speaker is talking over their head than he or she has not properly delivered their information. The thought making mistakes in front of an audience is very scary but once again it shows that you are human. If you can make a mistake then continue on with your speech the audience will not even give it a second thought and the experience will make you more at ease knowing that you will not be chastised by your audience.
